Kerala Style Kadala Curry / Chickpea curry with white chickpea || Infothora Recipes

 
Kadala means chickpea. Kadala curry is usually prepared with Red Kadala / Chickpea. It is commonly served with Puttu and Appam as breakfast in Kerala.

Today I am going to give you an easy Kadala Curry recipe with White Chickpea.

Ingredients;

  • White Kadala/Chickpea - 1 cup (soaked overnight)
  • Coconut bites (Thenga kothu) - 1/4 cups
  • Onion - 1 
  • Garlic - 3 cloves
  • Green chilli  - 3
  • Rice Flour - 1 1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Kashmiri Chilly powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 1 tbsp
  • Garam Masala - 3/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds
  • Red chilly - 2
  • Coconut oil
  • Salt
  • Sugar

Preparation;

  • Pressure cook the chickpea (soaked overnight) for 4 whistles. 
  • Heat coconut oil in a curry chatty (earthen pot used in Kerala). You can use any pan.  Add coconut bites (Thenga kothu) and fry until it turns light brown colour. Transfer the fried coconut bites to a bowl.
  • To the same Curry chatty or pan add some more oil. Once the oil is heat add mustard seeds. When the mustards splutter put 2 red chillies. 
  • When the chillies become light-dark colour add Chopped garlic, Green chilli, Curry leaves into it. Saute well until the raw smell goes completely.
  • Now add the chopped onion (medium size) into the pan and mix well. Add a little salt to speed up the process. Saute for 2 minutes.
  • Once the onions are cooked add 1 1/2 tbsp of Rice flour and mix well. Saute until the raw smell goes. [Adding rice flour will help to thicken the gravy, you can add maida or cornflour instead]
  • Now add turmeric powder, Kashmiri chilli powder, Coriander powder, Garam masala. mix and saute well for another 2 minutes.
  • Add fried coconut bites and mix them.
  • Now add the water from the cooked chickpeas into the pan. Mix and add more water if needed.
  • Now add the cooked Chickpea into the gravy. Check for salt, add salt if needed. Put a pinch of sugar to balance the whole taste.
  • Close the lid and allow it to cook on low flame for about 15 minutes.
  • After 15 minutes, open the lid and check the taste. 
  • Pour some coconut oil and add few curry leaves on top of the gravy.
Tasty Kadala Curry is ready to Serve. Enjoy it with Puttu or Appam.
